Q: So, how did you get into shooting weddings?

A: Ah, I was super fortunate when I started shooting weddings. I was actually given the opportunity to shoot a friends wedding without much experience. To be honest, I was so surprised that they felt confident in having me capture this big day. I shot that wedding and absolutely loved it! So much so that it got me thinking about maybe trying to do a couple more. 4 years later, this is now my full time job! My previous photography experience was mainly landscape and shooting parties. It was totally just a hobby of mine. I am actually a builder by trade, it was what I was doing full time at the time of my first wedding!

Q: What do you like to do when you’re not working weddings?

A: Ahh well at the moment weddings are pretty much consuming my life, 2021 has proven to be a insanely busy (and rewarding) year! But my favourite things to do when im not shooting weddings is hanging out with my wife & our new little furbaby, our Labradoodle puppy Maggie. Also, when I get the chance I love to play some golf & go surfing.

Q: What are a couple of your favourite things about photographing weddings?

A: My favourite things about weddings are the opportunity to tell the couple's stories. Their love, their laughter, their tears & all the memories in between! It’s seriously such an honour and a privilege to be let into a couples most important day and document it. As a photographer, by far my favourite moments of the day are the portraits, where we can go off in a quiet space and I make sure I allow time for the couple to take it all in. This is THEIR DAY after all & it goes by fast. It’s so beautiful to watch couples chatting & laughing about how surreal it all feels.

Q: What do you find particularly challenging when working a wedding?

A: Weather can be a challenge, but I think if your attitude is right & you are just excited that you are getting married you will still get beautiful photos!

Q: How would you describe your artistic style?

A: I would say my style is Real, Unposed, Relaxed. I want to capture the natural moments. My goal is to make sure you have the best day possible, no matter what.

Q: What would you say is your top priority when shooting a wedding?

A: Capturing the moments that matter, the moments that you want to remember.

Q: Do you have an all-time favourite wedding moment?

A: I remember shooting a wedding once, and the groom was so damn emotional when he saw his bride. You could hear him sobbing throughout this big old church. He proper ugly cried and I absolutely love that! I will always remember his face when he saw his girl. I think sometimes us fellas don’t want to show the emotions, but I am all for it.

Q: What do you think people might not know about you that they should?

A: I am really really serious.. I don’t like jokes at all & I hate having a boogie on the dance floor… haha

Actually the polar opposite, I’m pretty relaxed and I want to make sure you have the best day and as a photographer I am with you most of your day. I love what I do so much and I love getting the chance to make sure that your experience is perfect!

Q: What do couples get when they hire you?

A: They get me! I am a one man band so to speak. I do everything from your initial emails through to final delivery all myself. I do this to make sure that your wedding experience from start to finish is perfect, personal & enjoyable! I know that you may not have organised a wedding before, I know that it is completely overwhelming. I get it. I’m here to help you as much as I can throughout that process. Whether that means recommending vendors or helping you with your schedule pre wedding. Or on the day Carrying your dress so it doesn’t get too muddy too early (but please if you hire me please expect your dress to get a little dirty because we are gonna have an adventure!)

Q: How should people contact you?

A: Through my website! Also make sure you connect with me on the socials @mattashtonphotography
